The Character Crisis
Ancient Wisdom, AI, and the Future of Being Human
Can wisdom keep pace with power?

El Escandalo Book cover.jpg
Coming January 2027. A book about character in the age of artificial intelligence.
Human power keeps compounding. Character does not. The Character Gap is the distance between what we can do and what we are wise enough to do.

Why the Distance Between Power and Wisdom Is Growing

We inherit almost everything from those who came before us: their tools, their knowledge, their institutions, their wealth. The one thing no one can inherit is character. Every person has to build it from the beginning, one choice at a time. Meanwhile, the Character Gap keeps widening. The Character Crisis argues that it is the problem beneath all our other problems, and that artificial intelligence, by extending human power into the mind itself, is raising the stakes higher than ever.

The Book at Three Scales

What the Book Asks

This is not a book of predictions about technology.

It is a book about an older question: can anyone build character in an age when power is cheap?

Nietzsche is treated throughout as its most honest opponent, not a villain.
Along the way, the book looks at:

  • What the ancients can still teach us about character

  • Why intelligence alone has never made anyone good

  • What an age of machines asks of the human mind

  • What no technology can build for us

The tools are new. The question is two thousand years old.

The Duc de Choiseul-Praslin, a peer of France who had everything except the ability to govern himself, murdered his wife and died of arsenic before he could be tried. A legend in the author's family holds that his death was staged and that he escaped to begin a new life in Nicaragua.

Pasquier treats the legend honestly, as legend. He uses the duke's three attempted escapes, from guilt, from his own identity, and from death, to examine a modern world building technologies that promise the same escapes.

A Note from the Author

I wrote this book for anyone who senses that the questions our machines raise are older than the machines. It is my answer, and my invitation to think it through together.
